Reclaiming the – It’s up to us – Mural

Posted on April 18, 2018December 17, 2021 by mettelindgaard

Drove past the Cleveland classic “It’s up to us” mural today.

So sad to see that someone decided to tag it. So happy to see that someone decided to do something about it.

John Rivera-Resto’s neighborhood mural

“It’s up to us” was designed and painted by local artist John Rivera-Resto in cooperation with the local community as part of the Cleveland Mural My Neighborhood project. The work on this mural began July 2012 and was completed June 2014.

The wall is truly a community wall, showing detailed images of a vibrant street on the west side.  Study it closely and you will find the white police officer in a multicultural neighborhood, a family breaking down, the homeless guy, the elitist, the anarchist, the lonely boy, the dealer, the addict, the retired firefighter, the runaway girl with a torn poster behind her representing the system that failed her, the father and son cleaning graffiti of the wall and much more.

Learn more about John Rivera-Resto and the “it’s up to us” mural in this news clip on News5 from 2013.

Summer repairs of the mural

The historic murals was unfortunately vandalized last fall, but in cooperation with John Rivera-Resto Metro West Community Development Organization has decided to do something about it. With the help of a number of donors including The MetroHealth System and Sherwin-Williams General Industrial they have secured over $10,000 to cover the cost of a repair.

Stop by the mural this summer to follow their work. You will find “it’s up to us” on Clark Avenue and West 25th Street in Cleveland.
